Oncology Social Work and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction

Cancer is one of the most severe and prevalent diseases that not only affects the patient’s physical health but also causes many psychosocial difficulties for the patient, and as a consequence, deteriorates the quality of life. Cancer patients may experience many problems due to the difficulties posed by both cancer itself and the different types of cancer treatments, so their coping skills and quality of life may be adversely affected. Oncology social workers are obliged to alleviate these problems and to improve patients' coping skills and quality of life. Mindfulness-based practices, which are relatively new interventions and prove their effectiveness in a short time, are being used as an oncology social work intervention. Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), the leading of these practices, has been researched by many studies in oncology social work. Our study aimed to discuss the implementation and effectiveness of the MBSR program in the field of oncology social work. Surveying the researches has revealed that various studiesreported that MBSR alleviates patients’ psychological problems such as stress, anxiety, and depression, and to improve their quality of life and adaptation. Therefore, it can be said that MBSR can be used in oncology social work because it is a relativelyshort term, but at the same time, an effective social work intervention. Moreover, we recommend oncology social workers to consider learning and implementing MBSR. In Turkey, we recommend that there should be studies that implement and examine mindfulness-based interventions in oncology social work.
