The Reflection of the Primary Level Gifted Students’ Behavioral Characteristics to the Educational Settings and The Problems That may Arise
A clear consensus has not been reached in the field since the issue relating which of the existing implementations concerning the training of the gifted students is more useful is a rather controversial topic. It is mainly because all the studies conducted in this field mostly focused on the reviewing of the effect of the education settings on the gifted children’s development and academic success. However, it has been found out that the effect of the characteristics that comes along with being a gifted on the gifted students’ behavior and education process have been focused on less. The aim of this study is to compile and discuss the findings in the literature relating to reflection of the gifted students’ characteristics on the educational environment and behavior, especially the social-emotional aspects, in terms of problematic dimension. In this aspect, firstly the arguments relating to the appropriate educational preventions for the gifted students have been taken into account; mental, physical, emotional, social and behavioral features have been summarized according to the literature and finally the problems that may arise depending on these features have been discussed. When the characteristics of gifted students are taken into consideration, it is inevitable to observe problematic behaviors unless necessary measures are taken in the educational settings provided for these children. It is understood that these problems are likely to occur more frequently, especially in environments where they are educated together with their typically developing peers. However, it can be said that children having similar characteristics even in separate educational settings may experience academic competition, leadership competition and conflict, and can force their teachers. As a result, regardless of the educational settings, problems may arise unless the characteristics of gifted students are taken into consideration and necessary educational and behavioral arrangements are made.
