A Scale Proposal for the Assessment of the Conformity of the Illustrations to the Text
It is necessary that illustrations in the illustration of books, effective tools in education, fully interact with the reader’s visual perception and cognitive system. This interaction depends on the coherent relationship between the illustration and text. In the study, two scales based on expert opinions were developed to evaluate the coherence of the illustrations with the text. These scales are two assessment instruments determined as “The Evaluation of Design Elements According to the Design Principles in terms of Structural Principles” and “The Evaluation of Design Elements According to Design Principles in terms of Cognitive Principles”. The internal consistency of the assessments made by each of the experts was evaluated with the Cronbach Alpha reliability coefficient, which was found as ә= 0,96 in relation to the items of ‘Assessment Scale’. This result indicates that the scale has a high level of reliability. In terms of cognitive principles and structural concepts, the structural features of the text and the picture (such as subject, event / event pattern, characters, time and space) were defined and tabulated as design elements and design principles and design criteria. In this research, cognitive and structural principles were determined for evaluating whether the textbooks in the textbooks are suitable or not and two scales were developed in order to evaluate the design elements (color, form) in the pictures in accordance with these principles. These developed scales contain important information in terms of both directing the designers and evaluators, as well as showing the benefits of combining paintings with appropriate guidelines.
