PLATO AND WAR
In this study, it is analysed Plato’s thoughts on justice and war. In this regard, it is discussed whether Plato has a theory of war in the Republic or not, and whether he sees the war as a foregone conclusion of mankind. In this sense, the discussion about war will be especially within the frame of Republic, but his other dialogues will also be referred within the context of the study. Socrates discuss about how to be a just city, and states clearly that injustice causes war in Book One. But his mind starts to change in Book Two by identifying the situation of guardians whose purpose of defending the city. However, Socrates discusses the topic of war in light of justice and concludes that war is the outworking of the perfectly just city throughout Books Two, Four and Five. Accordingly, Socrates having shown that the quest for luxury leads to ever expanding desires that in turn lead to war in the Republic. When we analyse the republic in the context of war, we can see that the book was written by the effect of a civil war. Plato emphasises to the use of power virtually. According to this, king-philosopher and guardians have to accept to be virtuous as a duty before war and after war. The Republic is an educative dialogue ethically. In the context of these discussions, Plato evaluates being bad and good, right and wrong and being just and unjust before war, during war and after war. Plato's determinations on righteous life present the structure about how state should be. In the context of rightness Plato leans to ethics, in the context of justice he leans to politics.
