XVII.

COFFEE HOUSES AS THE PLACES OF INSTITUTIONALIZATION OF THE NEW SCIENCE IN 17TH CENTURY ENGLAND

In the 17th century England, the transition period of studying nature with a new method holds specific properties. The changing scientific perspective of this period which is described as a revolution has been a subject for many research. However, we are going to look into the media bearing the changes of this period. Where and how the talented hands meet with intelligence? These medias function as places for meeting, transferring and institutionalizing the new science. England, on the other hand, adds objective and independent characteristics by integrating the witnessing of people in these new medias. In this study, the different experiences of England in 17th century will be examined along with some comparisons. In this regard academies, museums, coffee houses, rich patrons, laboratories, public experiments, magazines, exchanging scholarly letters among scientists will be considered as instruments of transferring information. England’s free thinking environment in the 17th century wich is one of the most important factors of dissemination and institutionalization of the new science will be examined with respect to science’s economic, social and cultural context.
