The state's command as divine command: Civil religion in Thomas Hobbes

Thomas Hobbes whose theory of social contract and understanding of the state contributed a lot to the theory and practice of the modern political thought dwelled also on the relationship between the state and the religion. He reduced the divine laws into the laws of nature, and made the latter and the civil laws parts of the same whole. As he based sovereignty, not on God, but on the contract, it is suggested that he kept away from a metaphysical or sacred state. However, in my opinion, his political system accomodates a sort of civil religion, since the state which is the sole source and supervisor of the law, ethics and religion has a monopoly on truth, reality and salvation and its authority in these matters are unquestionable.
