1856 Islahat Fermanı’nın Amaltheia Gazetesinde Yansıması

Bu çalışmada 1856 Islahat Fermanı’nın Amaltheia gazetesinde yansıması ele alınıp değerlendirilmeye çalışılacaktır. Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nun tarihinde bir dönüm noktası olan Islahat Fermanıyla müslim-gayrimüslim hukukî eşitliğinin somut olarak gerçekleştirilmesi konusunda ciddi adımlar atıldıysa da, fermanda öngörülen hükümler çeşitli tepkilere yol açmıştı. Yunan milliyetçiliği ile Osmanlı kimliğini yaratma projesinde arada kalan İzmirli Rumların bu reform çabasına karşı tepkileri ile ilgili araştırmalar henüz emekleme aşamasındadır. Çalışmamızda 1838’den 1922’ye kadar yayın hayatına devam edebilen Amaltheia gazetesinde Islahat Fermanı hakkında yazılan ilgili makaleleri tespit edip değerlendirerek konuya yeni bir boyut kazandırmayı hedefliyoruz. Bu gazetedeki tartışmalardan yola çıkarak İzmirli Rumların durumu ve tutumuna ilişkin tespitler gelecekte yapılacak olan araştırmalar için bir başlangıç olabilir.

The Reception of the Ottoman Reform Edict of 1856 in the Smyrnean Newspaper Amaltheia

: The article looks into the reception of the Ottoman Reform Edict of 1856 as reflected in the pages of Amaltheia, a newspaper published in Greek in Izmir. With the 1856 Reform Edict, which is considered as a milestone in the history of the Ottoman Empire, concrete steps were taken towards the realization of the principle of equality between Muslim and non-Muslim Ottoman subjects. The Reform Edict and its provisions met with various responses among ethno-religious communities. Yet, the existing scholarship on the responses of the non-Muslim communities to the Reform Edict and to the project of creating an inclusive Ottoman political identity is still rather scant. The reactions among the Ottoman Greek-Orthodox community are perhaps even more interesting as its members were increasingly courted by the political identity of Greek nationalism of the Greek Kingdom. This article examines the newspaper articles on the Edict printed in Amaltheia, an Izmir newspaper published in Greek between 1838 and 1922, in a tentative attempt to appraise the various responses to the Edict’s announcement among the Greek-Orthodox population of Izmir
