Cultivation of vegetable soybean (Glycine max (L.) merrill.) as second crop under harran plain conditions

Soybean is categorized in two groups, the grain (field) and vegetable (garden) soybean. Vegetable soybean (edamame) is a large-seeded, special species with a sweet flavor. It is rich in protein, fat, phospholipids, minerals, vitamins and diet fiber. The vegetable soybean is generally sold in the pod as fresh or frozen bean. Aim of this study was to evaluate three vegetable soy bean cultivars (White Lion, Lucky Lion and Gion) for horticultural characteristics and suitability for cultivation as second crop in Harran plain. Field experiments as second crop were conducted in 2004 and 2005 to evaluate the production and yield potential. All three cultivars performed well based on pod yield and pod quality characteristics. Three vegetable soybean varieties were evaluated. Fresh green bean yield ranged from 1.74 to 1.82 ton da-1.
