WILFRED CANTWELL SMITH'S THEOLOGY OF FAITH

In this study, the theology of religion, which is discussed by Wilfred Cantwell Smith under the religious pluralism hypothesis and also called as world theology, has been examined. Whereas Smith emphasize on the necessity of pluralistic understanding, he first criticize the traditional religious understanding and theologies. This criticism forms the base of both religious pluralism, and the theology of religion he tried to reveal. However, the significant obstacle in front of the theology of religion is the claims of religions that conflict with each other. Therefore, Smith regarded developing a comment that will not obstruct his own hypothesis as necessary on the issues of salvation which is the most important issue in religious diversity discussions and the problem of distinctness on understanding of god of religions. At the final stage, he tries to shape the theoretical framework of theology of religion on the basis of concept of religion with claiming that humanity has a common religious history. The purpose of the study is to examine with critical approaches to the arguments whether this new theology hypothesis is successful or not
