Phenotypic and genetic parameter estimates of brown swiss calves for birth weight and some body measurements at birth
ABSTRACT: Phenotypic and genetic parameters for the birth weight and some body measurements of Brown Swiss calves born between 1991 to 1999 years in the Research Farm of Agricultural College at AtatUrk University were estimated. Least squares means for birth weight, body length, height at withers, chest girth and fore shank circumference were determined as 38,7 ± 0.35 kg, 62.1 ± 0.24 cm, 66.4 4 0.25 cm, 74.7 ± 0.25 cm and 1 1.6 ± 0.04 cm, respectively. The estimates of heritability for the same traits were 0.29 ± 0.148, 0.12 ± 0.1 1, 0.30 ± 0.150, 0.16 ± 0.122 and 0.21 ± 0.132, respectively. Genetic correlations among traits were positive except the correlation between body length and fore shank circumference. The highest genetic correlation was found between chest girth and fore shank circumference (0.89 ± 0.40). Phenotypic correlations were medium and high (0.38-0.61) levels. The highest phenotypic relationships were found between the birth weight - body length and birth weight - fore shank circumference.
