The Relationship of Economic Freedom and Tourism: A Panel Data Analysis
Tourism is one of the most important factors that causes economic growth and prosperity with the increasing in employment and foreign exchange inflowto related countries. Although the concept of economic freedom has been discussed in economic literature, it is only possible to be expressed by an index since 1970.The aim of this study is to analyze the relationship between economic freedom and tourism using the Panel Vector Autoregressive Model method for 32 OECD countries and the period between 1996 and 2017. According to Panel Granger causality results, two-way causality relationship is detected between economic freedom and the number of international visitors. Another result obtained in the study is that, as reported by the forecast error variance decomposition values calculated within 10 periods for the international visitor series, it is concluded that approximately 30% of the change in the number of international visitors arises directly from the economic freedoms of OECD countries. According to the findings obtained in the analysis results, economic freedom has a significant impact on the number of foreign tourists visiting a country in the long run. The fact that a country is at the top of economic freedom is an important determinant of the number of foreign tourists coming to that country.
