Effect of salt stress on germination and early seedling growth of Cotton
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of NaCl salinity on germination and early seedling and growth of cotton. Twelve cotton cultivars (Nazilli 84, Nazilli 84(S), Nazilli 87, Nazilli 143, Nazilli 303, Nazilli 342, Nazilli M 342, Nazilli 663, Aydın 110, Gürelbey, Özbek 142 ve Şahin 2000) developed by Nazilli Cotton Research Institute, Nazilli, Turkey were used as plant material and five different salt concentrations (Control, 4, 8, 12 ve 16 mmhos/cm NaCl) as salt treatment were investigated in present study. The experiment was conducted in a Completely Randomized Design with for replications at the laboratories of Mustafakemalpasa Vocational School, Uludag University, Bursa, Turkey, in 2005. Twenthy-five delinted cottonseeds for each variety were sown in flowerpods (in diameter: 17 cm and in depth: 15 cm). Flowerpods were irrigated regularly with water containing different salt concentrations after the sowing. Second and third irrigations were made 2nd day and 5th day after the sowing, repectively. Measurements were done tenth day after the sowing. Germination and seedling growth traits such as germination percentage, fresh root weight, fresh shoot weight, fresh root length and fresh shoot height were observed in the study. All investigated characters were negatively influenced by increased salt concentrations. Mean values measured were varied between 25.16 and 94.22 %, for germination percentage; 0.014 and 0.032 gr for fresh root weight; 0.220 and 0.477 gr for fresh shoot weight; 1.569 and 3.262 cm for fresh root length and 2.300 and 13.204 cm for fresh shoot height. The highest germination percentage with 73.73 % was obtained from cv. Nazilli 303.
