Comparison of in Vitro Gas production parameters, organic matter digestibility and metabolizable energy contents of some legume grains

The aim of this study was to compare the chemical composition, in vitro gas production, metabolizable energy (ME) and organic matter digestibility (OMD) of the legume grains from soybean (Glycine max), common vetch (Vicia sativa L.), nobran vetch (Vicia narbonensis L.), bitter vetch (Vicia ervilia Wild.), broad bean (Vicia faba L.), pea (Pisum arvense L., P. sativum L), lupin (Lupinus L.), chickling (Lathyrus sativus L.), chickpeas (Cicer arietinum L.) and navy bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). Gas production were determined at 0, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h and their kinetics were described using the equation y=a+b(1-e-ct). There were significant differences among legume grains in terms of chemical composition (P<0.05). The crude protein content of legume grains ranged from 21.8 to 39.3%; ether extract from 1.7 to 23.4%; crude ash from 3.2 to 4.7%; neutral detergent fiber (NDF) from 11.5 to 29.5%; acid detergent fiber (ADF) from 5.7 to 17.4% and acid detergent lignin (ADL) from 1.1 to 3.4%. Chemical composition had a significant effect on the gas production kinetics and estimated parameters (P<0.05; P<0.01). Total gas production ranged from 76.9 to 93.2 ml/200 mg DM, organic matter digestibility (OMD) from 73.1 to 91.4%, ME from 10.9 to 14.2 MJ/kg DM. The total gas production, OMD and ME of soybean were significantly higher than the other legume grains (P<0.05; P<0.01).
