The Concept of Child and Family in The Children’s Novel Named Köprü Altındaki Aile (The Family under The Bridge)

American children’s literature writer Natalie Savage Carlson’s Book, Köprü Altındaki Aile, which won the Newberry Honor award in 1959, is about a family story. In the novel, the intersection of the lives of the three brothers who had to live with their mothers on the street and the old Armand, whom they met by chance, is told from a child’s point of view. In a family axis, concepts such as interpersonal solidarity, co-operation, love, respect, trust are evaluated through the concept of family. In the novel, the concept of family is examined especially in terms of children and its meaning is discussed in this direction. The concept of family for children and the concept of the child for adults are emphasized. In this study, the meaning of the family phenomenon which is considered as the main subject in terms of children and adult heroes in the novel is examined in terms of other sub-subjects. The book not only reveals how child heroes changed the world of old Armand, but also emphasized that those who shut their hearts to love were in fact the most in need of love. Considering that changing the world began with changing a person, it has been concluded that the novel as a product of children’s literature is not only valuable in terms of values education, but also in terms of the educational function that it has undertaken in raising children who are the architects of the future. The novel is fully compatible with the principle of relativity to the child with its structure that describes the world of children from his point of view.
