AN OVERVIEW ON THE CONCEPT OF SELF-REFLECTION

The aim of this study is to describe self-reflection which takes place within the self-regulatory learning strategies including self-monitoring and afterwards self-evaluation and self-reaction phases respectively. Literature review about self-reflection revealed that there is the apparent lack of the concept of self-reflection in researches conducted in Turkey. Therefore, this study would be fruitful for future researches related to self-reflection in Turkey. “Self-reflection implies observing and putting an interpretation on one's own actions, for instance, considering one’s own intentions and motives as objects of thought” (Von Wright, 1992, 61). People analyze their experiences and judge from the results for the adequacy of their thoughts. Judgments include opinions reflecting how sufficient and capable an individual would be in order to do any work successfully (Bandura, 1986). According to Von Wright (1992), there is a relationship between self- reflection and metacognition. Therefore, self-reflection means reflecting one’s own intentions and knowledge through one’s own thinking process. Similarly Yussen (1985) also agreed that self-reflection as a kind of mental activity is related to metacognition. Grant, Franklin and Langford (2002) described self-reflection as the inspection and evaluation of one's thoughts, feelings, behavior and insight. As for selfreflection process, it includes individual’s being able to monitor, evaluate his/her progress and use such feedback to improve his/her performance. Grant, Franklin and Langford (2002) described self-reflection as the inspection and evaluation of one's thoughts, feelings, behavior and insight. Self-reflection process includes individual’s being able to monitor, evaluate his/her progress and use such feedback to improve his/her performance. According to Grant, Franklin ve Langford (2002), types of self-reflection are as follows:
