THE EFFECT OF TEACHING MATHMATICS COURCE ON PRE- SERVICE PRIMARY TEACHERS’ ATTITUDES TOWARDS MATHEMATICS AND TEACHING MATHEMATICS
This article reports on a study designed in order to determine the changes in pre-service primary education teachers’ attitudes towards mathematics and teaching mathematics through their participation in teaching mathematics course. In the study, one group pre-test/post-test pre-experimental design was preferred in order to measure the degree of changes occurring in pre-service primary education teachers’ attitudes towards mathematics and teaching mathematics as a result of the participation in teaching mathematics course. The data were gathered from 55 pre-service primary education teachers applicant to the teaching mathematics course in an education faculty at a university, in the western part of Turkey using the questionnaire “Teaching Mathematics” developed by Relich and Way (1992). The results indicated that pre- service primary education teachers had positive attitudes towards mathematics and teaching mathematics. There was also a significant shift towards a positive direction in pre-service primary teachers' attitudes about mathematics and teaching mathematics after the participation in teaching mathematics course. In addition, there were significant and high correlations between the pre-service primary education teachers' attitudes towards mathematics and teaching mathematics. The results are discussed in terms of their implications with respect to the attitudes changing in the teaching mathematics courses and in terms of their implications for pre-service teacher education particularly at the primary education level. Finally, various suggestions were presented for future studies in accordance with the findings obtained.
