This book is not only a medicine book of Ottoman Period but also it is a pharmacy book. It also has a characteristic that keeps historical quality about medicine belongs to applications which was brought from past by not only Arabian, Ottoman but also Islamic and the Europian civilizations Mustafa Behçet is a person who lived in 19th century and worked as a chief physician. Hezâr Esrâr whose writing started by Mustafa Behçet and consisted of compilations, had been in the list of the most important medicine books of that period. This work which was started to be written by Mustafa Behçet, was completed by Abdülhak Molla and Hayrullah Effendi and was provided for publication in 1862. As the name suggests, this book consists of a main episode with one thousand items and on the other hand an introduction, sixteen additional items and correction parts. This work not only consists of health problems, but also includes a lot daily problems which we can encounter and lots of practical information that can make our life easier. This application are not only for removing the effect after event happened, but also is applied as an protective before the adverse conditions occured. In some circumstances these applications are used as a means of prediction and determination. I find appropriate to illustrate this information with citations from Hezâr Esrâr. These items from the article which were performed applications for making life easier can be shown as an example. It is said that the doctor named Yames says “As consuming of cabbage prevents the inebriation, there has been a hat red between grapevine and it; if cabbage is planted close to grapvine, the vine which is produced of it is not qualified and goes bad. If the cabbage cooked in sprinkling vine, it isn’t cooked and even its colour doesn’t change.” Matyovel writes that if we fill a basket with a herb named as ‘Sığırkuyruğu’ with fig over each other in layers, the fig is protected from decaying. Holding fresh fruit and flower in the bottle, pot or bunchy in room and bedroom, causes headache and if it stays too long you feel as if coal strike. We can generally illustrate the applications made about the subject of prediction and detection as, the vine is pure or added water; the prediction of a woman if she is pregnant or not, the colour of a child’s eyes or the colour of the hair of animals, weather forecast. Let’s illustrate some of this applications from the book as mentioned. The writer of Havâsü’l-hayvân says that if we want to determine the woman is pregnant or not she is drunk a bowl of honey syrup and after that if she feels pain she is pregnant or if she doesn’t feel any pain, she is not pregnant. If we want to determine the vine is mixed with water, we can divide the amrud nut two parts and put one part into vine. After if the amrud nut stays over the vine it means that the vine is pure and when it sinks we can understand that is mixed. As the writer Razi says; After the nut shell crushed and mixed with olive oil and it is wiped on a new born baby’s head with blue eyes as a ointment frequently, the baby’s eyes turn to black. “If we want to know the colour of the lamb before the sheep gives birth to its lamb, we look at the tongue of the sheep, it is experienced among the shepherds that the colour of the lamb is the same as its mother’s tongue colour” as the Sadi Effendi writes. Except for the mental applicable items the superstitions ones are also inclueded in the book. If we clasify the items among them, it can be undersood that it is divided into the subtitles which is not found in the book like ‘bee sting, plant-tree, magic and sorcery, sexual intercourse, sexuality, sex, dialoque, natural events, dreaming, goods and material, power, pregnancy, animal, mine, colour, health, inebriation, vinegar, water, milk, vine, writing, food, poison’. The items in the book are more intensely brought together under the title of animal, plant and health. As Hezâr Esrâr is an folk medicine book, the plants and mixtures that will be used for cure are prepared taking care of amounts for the human health since it is important. The units of measurements that is used by writer are belong to Arabian, Ottoman and Persian civilizations. For example, drachma is used for weight measurement. The syrups, meats, nuts and etc. which is used as medicine not only give information about pharmaceutical terms but also about Turkish nutrition culture. In this aspect, we must accept the Turkish works as rich sources which enlighten the our culture history. Items which are used as drug is understood to have a characteristic feature such as heat, cold, dry, wet. So the drugs have been clasified according to the illnesses they are going to be used for. For evaluating the plants, animal ingredients and chemicals in the pharmacy field, these are even create enough reason. (Gümüşatam,2010: 1082) The work was brought together making use of a lot of doctors from Roman, Greek, Italian, Arabian and Islam civilizations. So this provided not only the work to have many cultured structure but also to be able to bring a lot of useful informations, which need speciality in different fields, together. So in the light of these information, it is true to say that Hezâr Esrâr is an important medicine book that is written for informing people in that period. The aim of this article is to make Hezâr Esrâr a current issue again which enlightens the society about medical issues at that time and to show medical scientists’ actually being competent on people’ s daily lives. Conclusion This book is not only a medicine book of Ottoman Period but also it is a pharmacy book. It also has a characteristic that keeps historical quality about medicine belongs to applications which was brought from past by not only Arabian but also Islamic and the Europian civilizations. Plants are in the top of the list as the most benefical elements. This plants are targeted to be forward to public by being expressed with their Turkish meaning except for the words that are used in the languages they come from. And this attitude providedthe plants to include into folk medicine removing it from borders of botanic science. The items about animals are also included, but an application, such as to be protected from supersitions or to be informed about events which can cause bad results other than medical healings, is used. For example, as I mentioned in the sample items above; to guess the rain or dry cold from behaviour of animals such as crow, dog, owl. In the light of these items Hezâr Esrâr, even by superstition or mental ways, had been an important medical source which includes the beliefs of period, informing the folk, solving the problems which can occur in every fields of public in a broad solution list with doctor’s tag
