ADAPTATION OF THE MOBILE PHONE ADDICTION CRAVING SCALE TO TURKISH: FURTHER EVIDENCE OF RELIABILITY AND VALIDITY

The aim of the present study is to adapt the Mobile Phone Addiction Craving Scale (MPACS) into Turkish and to examine the reliability and validity of the scale. The scale, which was originally developed in Spain and consists of 8 items in one dimension, has been translated into Turkish by three academics who are expert on both languages. Another independent expert from the Turkish language department analysed the instrument in terms of clarity and readability. Later, the Turkish version was piloted by using mostly individual interviews with 26 participants. This pilot study was conducted to ensure the adequacy of the scale content to the Turkish context. The final version of the scale was administered to 682 volunteered respondents from 18 to 65 years of age via paper and online questionnaires. The results of the exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses supported the single factor structure of the original scale. The internal consistency coefficient was computed as .881, which was similar to that of the original scale. The results of the study revealed that the Turkish form of MPACS is a valid and reliable instrument that can be used to evaluate the problematic cell phone use. The few items on the MPACS, with its capability for measuring craving, differs it from other phone addiction scales.
