ANA DİLDEKİ YAZI YÖNÜNÜN İKİNCİ DİLDEKİ OKUMA METİNLERİNDEKİ GÖRSEL YERLEŞİMİNE ETKİSİ

İkinci dilde okuduğunu anlama süreci iyi araştırılmış olmakla birlikte, anadildeki yazı yönünün yabancı dil olarak İngilizce öğreniminde okuduğunu anlamaya olan etkileriyle ilgili sınırlı sayıda araştırma bulunmaktadır. Bu nedenle bu yönde bir araştırma yapılması ihtiyacı ortaya çıkmıştır. Bu araştırmanın amacı iki yönlüdür: İngilizce öğrenen, anadili soldan sağa yazılan ve sağdan sola yazılan bireylerin okuma süreçlerindeki muhtemel farklılıkları ortaya çıkarmak; ve anadildeki yazı yönünün İngilizce öğreniminde okuma metni ve resim yerleşimi üzerindeki muhtemel etkilerini ortaya koymak. İngilizce öğrenen, anadili soldan sağa yazılan (Türk öğrenciler gibi) ve anadili sağdan sola yazılan (Suriye ve Iraklı öğrenciler gibi) katılımcılardan bir okuma çalışması yapmaları istendi ve göz hareketleri göz takip bilgisayar sistemi ile kaydedildi. Araştırmada iki tür araç kullanıldı: Okuma metinlerinde resim kullanımı anketi ve göz takip deneyleri için içerisinde resimler bulunan bir okuma metni. Göz takip verisinden elde edilen bulgular anadili soldan sağa yazılan öğrencilerin diğerlerine kıyasla metnin soluna yerleştirilen resimlere daha fazla odaklandığını gösterirken, anadili sağdan sola yazılan öğrencilerin ise metnin sağına yerleştirilen resimlere daha fazla odaklandığını ortaya koymuştur. Deneylerden elde edilen bulgular, anadil yazı yönünün resim yerleşimiyle ilgili öğrenci tercihlerini etkilediğini gösteren anket bulgularıyla doğrulanmıştır. Bu bulgular ışığında yabancı dil öğretimi için hazırlanacak metinlerdeki görsellerin yerleşiminde öğrencilerin anadillerinin göz önünde bulundurulması gerektiği yönünde bir öneride bulunmaktayız.

THE ROLE OF L1 SCRIPT DIRECTION ON PICTURE LAYOUT OF L2 ENGLISH READING TEXTS

Although the process of second language reading comprehensionhas been well investigated, there are limited number of studiesinvestigating L1 script direction and its effects on EFL readingcomprehension. The purpose of this study was twofold: to discover anypossible differences in the reading process of L1 left-to-right and right-to-left learners of English; and to investigate the possible effects of L1script direction on EFL reading text and picture layout. EFL learners withleft-to-right L1 script direction (such as Turkish learners) and right-to-left L1 script direction (such as learners from Syria and Iraq) were askedto do a reading task as their eye movements are recorded with eye-tracking computer set-up. Two instruments were employed: Use ofpictures in reading texts survey and reading text with pictures in eye-tracking experiment. The results of the eye-tracking data suggested thatstudents with left-to-right L1 script direction fixated more on the pictureson the left than others; and similarly students with right-to-left L1 scriptdirection fixated more on the pictures on the right of the text. Thesefindings from the second tool were also verified with the questionnairefindings, in which the effect of L1 script direction on learner preferenceof picture layout was proven.
