Ferengi “Kazanç Kuralları” ve Niccolò Machiavelli

Bu çalışmada, büyük bir beğeniyle izlenen Star Trek dizisinde siyaset felsefesinin önemli isimlerinden Niccolo Machiavelli’nin izleri takip edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Machiavelli’nin yanı sıra dizide felsefe tarihinin önemli filozoflarına yoğun şekilde göndermeler yapıldığı görülür. Ferengiler’in temel felsefesi “her ne olursa olsun her eylem, mutlaka kazançla sonuçlanmalıdır.” Bu uğurda hiçbir etik, dini ya da siyasal kod önemli değildir. Tek amaç kazanmaktır. Bu; Ferengiler için en büyük başarı, güç ve saygınlık anlamına gelmektedir. Kazanç uğruna, şiddet ve korku salmak; dini duyguların istismarı, kazanca giden yolda müttefikler edinmek ve gerekirse bu birliği bozmak, duruma göre merhametli ya da acımasız olmak gibi Machiavelli’in izini takip etmişlerdir. Anlaşılan o ki gelecekte de gerek insan gerek uzaylı formu olsa da bencillik kendini hep göstermektedir. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine adlı seride Ferengiler olarak karşımıza çıkan uzaylı bir ırkın kazanma ilkesi ile, Niccolò Machiavelli’nin “Prens: Hükümdarlıklar Hakkında” isimli eserinde sözünü ettiği yönetim yöntemleri arasındaki paralellikleri örneklerle göstermeyi amaçladık.

Ferengi “Rules of Earnings” and Niccolò Machiavelli

This study traces the influence of Niccolo Machiavelli, one of the leading figures in political philosophy, in the widely acclaimed TV series Star Trek. The series is seen to make extensive references to prominent philosophers of the history of philosophy along with Machiavelli. The fundamental philosophy of the Ferengis is “every action whatsoever must necessarily result in an acquisition.” No ethical, religious, or political code is important for this sake. The sole purpose is to acquire. The acquisition means success, power, and reputation to Ferengis. In this context, Niccolò Machiavelli seems to have found his most faithful disciples. They have followed the footprints of Macchiavelli by spreading fear through violence for the sake of acquisition, exploiting religious sentiments, finding allies in the way to acquisition and betraying them if needed, being compassionate or merciless as occasion requires. Apparently, selfıshisness will always manifest itself in the future, too, either by human beings or aliens. To summarize, this study aims to illustrate the parallels between the rules of acquisition of an alien race appearing in the series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and the administrative methods outlined by Machiavelli in his work “The Prince: On the Reigns”.
