The Analyses of Environmental Attitudes of Eighth Grade Primary School Students

In this study, 8th grade students’ attitudes towards environment studying in the central district of Tokat have been analysed.. In this study, Children’s Environmental Attitude and Knowledge Scale, which has been developed by Leeming, Dwyer, and Bracken (1995), has been used. The Turkish version of the scale was adapted by Aslant, Uluçınar Sağır and Cansaran (2008) and Cronbach’s Alpha co-efficient reliability of this scale has been found as α=.85. Target population of the study was eighth grade primary school students studying in the central district of Tokat. The scale has been applied to 360 eighth grade students who are studying at two central district, three town and five village schools. Screening survey method has been used in this research. According to the gathered analyses, environmental attitudes of the students have been found at a low level. Attitude grades of students studying in the towns appear to be significantly higher than those studying in the centre of cities and villages. Besides, the attitude grades of students whose fathers are unemployed appear to be significantly higher than those whose fathers are civil servants and workers. Moreover, there appears to be no significant difference about their environmental attitudes according to the independent variables such as the place where the students live, gender, training level of the parents, professional status of the parents, socioeconomic level, and the number of siblings
