Current State of Nasocomial Infection

Nasocomial infections are becoming one of the most important problems in intensive care units. It is well knownthat these infections are major cause of morbidity and mortality in critically ill patients and are associated with inc- reases in the lenght of stay and excessive hospital costs. Most nasocomial infections are associated with using inva- sive medical or surgical procedure. Ventilator associated pneumoniae, urinary tract infections and both primary andcatheter related bloodstream infections incidance are high in intensive care units. Using infection control programs, diagnostic criteria and management guidelines for nasocomial infections are essential to help reduce the incidanceof nasocomial infections and unnecessary usage of antibiotics.
