The term "freedom" represents one of the important questions of modern civilization. Iranian poets gave this term a lot of attention through centuries, even though the understanding differs from modern times. In the first period of Persian poetry, and literature in general, lexeme freedom (?z?d?) was used as the opposite of the word "slave" (barde) in the meaning of noble kind (as?lne??de), where the word ?z?de was used by Iranians. As time went by, the word ?z?di took on an esoteric meaning until the beginning of the Constitutional monarchy in Iran. At that time, poets thought of freedom as a term that represented social freedom, even though they didn't have a clear definition, so they were in a way lost between history, local traditions, and western way of thinking
