Effect of different sowing dates on root rot and wilt fungi of faba bean (Vicia faba) varieties

Root rot and wilt are important diseases of faba bean (Vicia faba L.). The research was conducted under natural field conditions to determine the effect of different sowing dates on root rot and wilt fungi of faba bean (Vicia faba) varieties. Seeds of ten faba bean varieties (Black Lazer, Tolera, Seher, Gölyaka, Lara, Otona, Sakız, Sevilla, Sultan and İnci) were sown on three different dates (May 14, 28 and June 11). The sowing date significantly influenced the root-rot and wilt diseases of faba bean cultivars. Fusarium spp., Rhizoctonia spp. and Verticillium spp. were the most frequently isolated fungi from the infected stem and root samples of faba bean. Rhizoctonia spp. and Verticillium spp. showed the most frequently isolated fungi on May 14 while Fusarium spp. was the most frequently isolated fungus on June 11. Isolation frequency of root rot and wilt fungi were differences significantly among the faba bean varieties. Fusarium spp. and Rhizoctonia spp. showed the highest isolation frequency in faba bean variety Sakız while Verticillium spp. showed the most isolation frequency in Otona.
