Hafıza saati ne zaman çalar? İzmir Metropoliti Hrisostomos ve Atina’daki Abidesinin Hafıza Maceraları

Abidelerin hafıza mekânları (lieux de mémoire) olarak çoklu ve değişken anlamlarıyla ulusal ideolojiyi tahkim etme, kolektif hafızayı şekillendirme, ihtilaflı hafızaları harekete geçirme kabiliyetleri ve bununla çelişkili gibi görünmekle beraber unutulma potansiyelleri üzerine geniş bir literatür mevcuttur. Bu çalışmada, modern Yunanistan tarihinin oldukça çalkantılı bir epizodu olan İki Savaş Arası Dönem’de inşa edilmek istenen bir abidenin anlatısı üzerinden, hafıza rejimleri ve bu rejimlerde “Küçük Asya Felaketi” ve “muhacir meselesinin” tuttuğu yer takip ediliyor. Bu amaçla, İzmir Metropoliti Hrisostomos’un Yunan milliyetçiliğinin birbirleriyle çelişki içinde görünen dinî ve seküler kanallarını 1922’deki “şehadeti” ile bünyesinde buluşturan çok boyutlu hatırası, bu hatıranın cisimleşmiş hali olarak ortaya çıkan Atina’daki abide ve bu abidenin 1920’lerden günümüze uzanan “macerasına” odaklanılmaktadır. When Does the Memory Clock Chime? Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Smyrna and the Mnemonic Adventures of His Monument in Athens

There is a well-established literature on monuments as sites of memory (lieux de mémoire), their ability to strengthen national ideology, to shape collective memory as well as to mobilize conflicting memories; and although it seems contradictory, their potential to get consigned to oblivion through their multiple and pliable meanings. In this study, via the narrative of a monument erected in the interwar era, particularly turbulent years in modern Greek history, the memory regimes and the role of the “Asia Minor Catastrophe” and the “refugee issue” in those regimes are investigated. For this purpose, this article focuses on the multifaceted memory of Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Smyrna, who unifies the purportedly incompatible religious and secular strands of Greek nationalism through his “martyrdom” in 1922, his monument in Athens as the embodiment of this memory and its “adventures” from the 1920s to contemporary times.
