Occurence of intestinal atresia and their operative treatments in calves 54 cases (1992-20009
In this study, prevalence, localisation and treatment modalities of intestinal atresia cases were summarised in the calves admitted to the Department of Surgery, School of Veterinary Medicine, and University of Kafkas. The animal material consisted of 54 calves with intestinal atresia. Various lesions of intestinal atresia were detected in the calves including atresia ani (18 cases), atresia ani et recti (11 cases), atresia recti (5 cases), membranous structures causing obstruction of large and small intestines (4 cases), rectovaginal fistula formation (10 cases) and developmental disorders in intestines (4 cases). Surgical intervention was made for the all cases. The calves were successfully treated except for the calves with atresia coli, undeveloped intestines and having obstruction in their intestines. Due to a large number of cases, presentation of the necessary information to both clinicians and farmers and evaluation of the treatment alternatives for such cases were concluded to be useful.
