Kedilerde megakolon
Feline megacolon
Megacolon is an acquired disease affecting cats of middle and old ages and is characterised by persistent dilatation of the colon. 14 cats were diagnosed with megacolon at the Department of Surgery, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Istanbul. The cases were pre- and postoperatively subjected to clinical, radiological, laboratory and histological examina-tions. According to the data obtained significant increases in comparison to normal were deter-mined in RBC, HCT, PLT, BUN, SGPT, K, Cl, Ca values. In the histological interpretation loss of contractile elements of colon were seen. For treatment subtotal colectomy was carried out after electrolyte imbalances and dehydration in the animals were corrected. On the postoperative 15th day blood analysis was repeated and it was observed that all values were within the physiological normal range. Fecal analysis was not different in either the preoperative or postoperative period. Follow-up procedures were done on the cases for at least 6 months and constipation complaints were not noted except in one case. The case with recurrens had generalised spondylosis and ver-tebral column deformity and recurrence was seen 6 years after colectomy. In conclusion, subtotal colectomy has been found to be an effective method in treating feline magacolon.
