Amerika Birleşik Devletleri Gazetelerinde Maraş Savunması

Maraş’ın milli mücadelesinde, şehirde bulunan Amerikalı misyonerler dolayısıyla, Amerikan basını Maraş Savunması’na yakın ilgi gösterdi. Bilhassa şehirdeki misyonerlerin gönderdiği haberler, gazetelerde yer aldı. Türklerle Fransızlar arasındaki çatışmalarla ilgili misyonerlerin günlükleri gazetelerde yayımlandı. Ermenilerle ilgili birçok iddia, çatışmaların şehre verdiği zararlar, Fransız işgal güçlerinin şehirdeki durumu, işgal güçlerinin şehri terk edişi Amerikan gazetelerinde haber olarak yayımlandı. Ayrıca bazı Amerikan gazeteleri, Osmanlı yöneticilerinin Maraş’taki olaylarla ilgili açıklamalarına da yer verdi. Bu çalışmada; Ocak-Şubat 1920 dönemlerindeki hadiseleri konu edinen 20 farklı Amerikan gazetesinin haberlerine değinildi ve bunlar mukayeseli olarak değerlendirildi. Gazetelerin Maraş’la ilgili haberleri, çatışmaların başlaması, Osmanlı yöneticilerinin Maraş’taki çatışmalarla ilgili açıklamaları, işgalin şehre verdiği zarar, şehrin işgalden kurtuluşu, Ermenilerle ilgili iddialar, Fransız işgal kuvvetlerinin durumu gibi başlıklar altında sınıflandırılarak ele alındı. Söz konusu haberler incelenerek şehrin Milli Mücadele yıllarındaki tarihiyle ilgili farklı kaynakların ortaya konulması amaçlandı. Ayrıca Maraş’ta yaşanan olayların Amerika basınında nasıl ele alındığı ve Amerika kamuoyuna nasıl sunulduğu ortaya konulmaya çalışıldı.

Defense of Marash ın The Newspapers of United States

During the National Struggle in Marash, US press had paid great attention to Marash defense because of the American missionaries in the city. News sent by missionaries from the city published in the US press. The missionaries' diaries about the conflicts between Turks and French were published in the newspapers. Many claims about the Armenians, damages in the city caused by conflicts, the situation of the French occupation forces in the city, withdrawal of occupation forces from the city were published as news in American newspapers. In addition, some newspapers reported on the statements of Ottoman administrators about events in Marash. In this study; The news of 20 different American newspapers covering the events of January-February in 1920 were mentioned and they were evaluated as comparative. The newspapers’ news were classified under the headings such as, the beginning of the conflicts, the Ottoman administrators' explanations about the conflicts in Marash, damage in the city caused by the invasion, the liberation of Marash from the occupation, the claims about the Armenians and the situation of the French occupation forces. The news of the newspapers about Marash was examined and it was aimed to reveal different sources of the city’s history in the years of the National Struggle.In addition, this study was conducted to investigate how events in Marash were handled in American press and presented to American public.
