Causes and treatment of uterine prolapse and invagination of horn uterine in mares

Uterine prolapse rarely occurs in mares after normal foaling, dystocia or retained fetal membranes. Complete uterine prolapse is easily diagnosed and is a true life-threatening situation. Uterine prolapse may be complicated by bladder eversion, uterine rupture, intestinal herniation, rupture of the uterine artery, shock, ischemia, laminitis, metritis, endotoxemia and death. It can occur following dystocia, abort, retained placenta, strong tenesmus (e.g. vulva and vagina laceration) and uterus atony. Treatment involves cleaning and replacing the uterus into the abdomen, a retaining suture in the vulvar lips to prevent reprolapse, intravenous fluids, broad spectrum antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications. In this review, causes and treatment of uterine prolapsus with to invagination uterine in mares were focused in light of recent articles in the literature.
