Identity Status of University Students with Different Levels of Social Support

This research was carried out to determine the differences in the university students’ identity status according to their perceived social support from family/friends. Participants were 1653 university students. Students’ identity development was measured by using Extended Ego Identity Status Scale which was based on Marcia’s identity status paradigm. Students’ social support was measured by Perceived Social Support from family/friends, which was developed by Procidano and Heller. Data were analyzed by Variance Analyses. Results showed that students’ identity status was affected by perceived social support from family/friends. Those with identity achievement students and those with foreclosure students had perceived high family support. In addition, those with identity achievement students also perceived high degree of social support from friends.
