The Relationship Between Different Ways of Coping and Mathematics Anxiety

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationships between different coping strategies and mathematics anxiety. Five hundred fifty nine college students responded to the Ways of Coping Questionnaire and the Revised Mathematics Anxiety Scale. Multivariate differences were found on Distancing, where students who used it scored lower on Mathematics Test Anxiety. Students who used Accepting Responsibility scored higher on Mathematics Test Anxiety. Differences on Mathematics Test Anxiety and Numerical Task Anxiety were found on Escape-avoidance in that students who used this coping strategy scored higher. Students who used Positive Reappraisal had lower Mathematics Test Anxiety. Findings are discussed.
