IDEA OF THE SACRED IN JUDAISM

All religions have a sphere of sacred, framework of which is determined by the believers. The boundaries of these spheres widen in time; they become impervious and turned into a taboo in the society. One of the most direct ways of understanding a belief system is to demonstrate its idea of the sacred. Judaism, which is considered the oldest of the revelation based religions, has been one of the most researched religions in terms of its beliefs and practices. One of the most important factors which had influenced formation of beliefs and rituals is the idea of the sacred. Describing the sacred and to what extent it influences the sacredness of persons and objects is an issue worth investigating. This article discusses the idea of the sacred and its position in Judaism. Through positioning the idea of sacred in the axis of belief in God this research has investigated how the idea of the sacred shaped the sacredness of major people, times, places or objects in the lives of Jewish people.
