Antibiotic Resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae Strains Isolated from Clinical Specimens
Streptococcus pneumoniae is one the most common agents that causes community-acquired pneumonia. Penicillin is still the agent that commonly used in pneumoccal infections but because of the increasing rate of resistance other agents are used in treatment, too. In this study we aimed to investigate the antimicrobial susceptibility of S.pneumoniae isolates in six years period. S.pneumoniae strains (n=328) that isolated from various clinical samples sent to the laboratory during January 2006 - December 2011 were evaluated retrospectively. S.pneumonaie isolates were identified by optochin disc method and Vitek2 Compact (Biomeriux, France) automatized system and antibiotic susceptibility was done by Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method as recommended CLSI. Respiratory tract samples (n=147) were the most common clinical samples that S.pneumoniae were isolated. Susceptibility rates of tested isolates were as follows; for penicillin, 82.5 % susceptible, 2.5 % intermediate, 15 % resistant; for erythromycin 81.6 % susceptible, 1.2 % intermediate, 17.2 % resistant; for clindamycin 85.6 % susceptible, 14.4 % resistant; for levofloxacin 94.3 % susceptible, 0.7 % intermediate, 5 % resistant; ofloxacin 89 % susceptible, 2 % intermediate and 9.0 % resistant and for vancomycin, all isolates were found susceptible.
