The Political Background of the Relations Between the Western World and Grecee from a Historical Perspective (1821-1945)

The political background of Greece's relations with the Western world during 1821-1845 periods was shaped around the axis of parties' priorities, interests and threat perceptions. While the western world determined its policies towards Greece in respect to the requirements of power politics, Greece attempted to construct her relations with the West on the basis of an irredentist policy until 1922 originating from romantic nationalism. The period between 1821 and 1843 encompasses the mutual construction process of the relations. This process also forms the political infrastructure of the future periods. The relations between 1843 and 1875 display some identifiable similarities with the period between 1875 and 1914. Both periods witness the emergence of various tension ridden issues emanating from a conflict between power politics and romantic nationalism. Greek policy to identify her relations with the Western world on the basis of romantic nationalism came to an end after the Anatolian catastrophe and relations during 1922-1945 periods were reestablished on the basis of power politics. The study aims to explore the underlying causes of parties' motivations in this relationship and examines the parties' attempts to shape the political background of the relations within the framework of internal and external political dynamics.
