Language learners come to language classrooms with so many diverse needs that it is almost impossible for a single language teaching method to address all those needs. One way of dealing with the difficult task at hand might be to bring a more flexible and a more diversity-embracing approach to language teaching methods. Although he never wrote about language teaching in particular, Russian scholar Mikhail Bakhtin’s (18951975) thoughts on language and communication could provide some useful insights to researchers and teachers in the field of language learning and teaching. The purpose of this paper is to take a look at the major language teaching methods from a Bakhtinian perspective, and to discuss some implications of Bakhtin’s ideas for the modern language classroom. It was hoped that the discussion of Bakhtin’s ideas via concepts familiar to language teachers and researchers could contribute to the better understanding of those ideas
