Comparison of two laxative agents for precolonoscopy bowel preparation: Sennoside versus standard polyethylene glycol solution

Barsak temizliğinde standart 4litre polietilen glikol solüs- yonu (PEG) ile sennosid’in etkisini karşılaştırmayı amaç-ladık.

This study was undertaken to compare the efficacy of standard 4-liters polyethylene glycol solution (PEG) and sennoside for bowel cleansing. Eighty patients having colonoscopy indication for any reason were voluntarily admitted in to the study. Patients were randomized to two groups to receive either PEG (30 patients) or sennoside (50 patients) for colon cleansing. Colonic cleansing of the patients was evaluated by Aranchick scoring scale according to educational levels. The perfect cleansing rate according to Aranchick scoring scale was 70% (21 patients) in the PEG group and 36% (18 patients) in the sennoside group independent of the educational status of patients (p<0,05). We found a significant correlation between the colonic cleansing rates and educational status of patients. The percentage of patients having perfect colonic cleansing were 42% and 68%in the groups of patients with primary and high school-university degrees respectively while this ratio was 10% in the group of illiterate patients (p<0,01). Independent from the educational status factor, we obtained a significantly better colonic cleansing with PEG. The results could have been in favor of senna if we had used it in split doses not only in higher doses as we did.
