Detection and characterization of rotaviruses in domestic pigeons Columba liviaj using polyacry lamide gel electrophoresis PAGE technique

This research was conductea to determine the presence of rotaviruses in domestic pigeons using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis PAGE silver staining. Furthermore. the rotaviruses determined in this study were distinguished according to their migration patterns. Rotaviruses are established as cause of gastroenteritis especially in the young of mamals and birds species. and give rise to both symptomatic and asymptomatic infections. In this research, 323 faecal specimens that belong to 289 cl inically healthy and 34 diarrhoeic pigeons were tested by PAGE silver staining technique. At the result. 22 samples 7.61 % taken from healthy pigeons and 11 samples 32.35 % from diarrhoeic pigeons were detected as positive for rotavirus. Positive specimens detected were characterized as typical rotavirus according to pattern of 11 RNA segments. and tlıree different electrophoretypes were detected. This report is the fırst detection of rotaviruses in faecal specimens from domestic pigeons in Turkev.
