Investigation of the vaginal bacterial flora at different stage of sexual cycle in the bitch

In this study, it was aimed to investigate the bacterial vaginal flora and different sexual cycle. Fifty three bitches from different breeds were used as material. Vaginal swab samples were taken from the vagina of bitches, which were transported in the Stuart transport medium for bacteriological examinations, and swab samples were examined by routine methods. Thereafter, vaginal cytology was applied on every bitch for distinguishing the cycle's periods. Fifty six microorganisms were isolated from 48 of 53 bitches from different breeds (90.5%). Nine E.coli (16%), 9 Candida spp. (16%), 6 Citrobacter diversus (10.7%), 5 Citrobacter freundii (8.9%), 4 Klebsiella oxytoca (7.1%), 4 Klebsiella pneumonaiae (7.1%), 3 S. aureus (5.3%), 3 S. intermedius (5.3%), 3 Bacillus spp. (5.3%), 2 S. saprophticus (3.5%), 2 Streptococcus agalactiae (3.5%), 2 Micrococcus spp (3.5%), 2 Citrobacter amalonaticus (3.5%) and 2 Enterobacter agglomerans (3.5%) of 56 bacteria were identified. As a result, it was determined that different bacteria could grow as well as same bacteria at different stage of sexual cycles and vaginal flora was determined mixed character.
