Foreign direct ınvestments and foreign trade balance: The case of Turkey

Inward foreign direct investments (IFDI) influence many macoreconomic indicators of the recipient countries. While these effects are in generaly positive, some negative effects are able to come into being, especially in developing countries. The aim of this study is to examine causal relationships between IFDI and the trade balance of a country, which is the most important factor of foreign payments balance. In the empirical section, which is based on the Bound Test, effects of IFDI on trade balance of Turkey have been analyzed. The empirical findings show positive causality between IFDI and exports in the long run (1992- 2011) and one of the short runs (2002-2011). There is no relationship between IFDI and imports.
