The Examination of the Internet Usage Properties and Relationship Between Purposes of Internet Usage and Social Media Addiction Among University Students

The purpose of the study was to determine the relationship between internet usage purposes and social media addiction levels of university students. The research is of the relational screening type and its sample consisted of 439 students from a public university. Data collected through “Purpose of Internet Use Scale(PIUS) and Social Media Addiction Scale - Adult Form(SMAS-AF). According to findings, social media addiction level of one-fourth of the participants were above average. Spending a long time on the internet and social media, social media addiction, gender, academic success are variables that affect internet usage purposes. The ones that use social media excessively, students with low academic success use the internet for a psychological needs, entertainment and socialization purposes. There is a positive significant relationship between psychological needs and socialization dimensions of internet usage purposes and social media addiction. It is concluded that social media addiction increases among the students that use the internet for psychological needs and socialization purposes.

Üniversite Öğrencilerinin İnternet kullanım Özellikleri ve İnternet Kullanım Amaçları ile Sosyal Medya Bağımlılığı İlişkisinin İncelenmesi

Bu araştırmanın amacı üniversite öğrencilerinin internet kullanım amaçları ve sosyal medya bağımlılığı ilişkisini incelemektir. Araştırma, ilişkisel tarama türündedir. Araştırmanın örneklemi kamu üniversitesinden 439 öğrenciden oluşmaktadır. Veriler, İnternet kullanım Amaçları Ölçeği (İKAÖ) ve Sosyal Medya Bağımlılık Ölçeği- Yetişkin Formu (SMBÖ-YF) aracılığıyla toplanmıştır. Bulgulara göre, katılımcıların dörtte birinin sosyal medya bağımlılık düzeyi ortalamanın üstündedir. İnternet ve sosyal medyada uzun süre geçirmek, sosyal medya bağımlığı, cinsiyet ve akademik başarı internet kullanım amaçlarını etkileyen değişkenlerdir. Sosyal medya kullanım süresi yüksek olan ve akademik başarısı düşük öğrencilerin, interneti eğlence, sosyalleşme ve psikolojik ihtiyaçlarını giderme amaçlı kullanımı yüksektir. İnternet kullanım amaçlarının psikolojik ihtiyaçlar ve sosyalleşme boyutları ile sosyal medya bağımlılığı arasında pozitif, anlamlı bir ilişki vardır. İnterneti psikolojik ihtiyaçlarını giderme ve sosyalleşme amacıyla kullananların, sosyal medya bağımlılıklarının da arttığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.
