Comparison of formulas for estimating volume in stacked logs

The most suitable method were tested in stacked log volumes on 18 logs of Taurus cedar (Cedrus libani A.Rich.), 25 logs of Cilician fir (Abies cilicici Carr.), and 27 Brutian pine (Pinus brutia Ten.) all of which were measured in detail. The volume of each log was estimated using Smalian’s, Bruce’s, and Patterson and Doruska’s new model (PD) formulas. These estimates were compared with “true” volume of each log which was determined by aggregating the volumes of measured short sections (10 cm) using Smalian’s formula. The mean error of Petterson-Doruska’s (PD) new model formula estimate of log volumes was less than those derived from Smalian’s and Bruce’s formulas. Although the mean error of Patterson-Doruska’s new models estimate of 1 and 3 meters lengths log volumes was not significant for Taurus cedar (p>0.05), the mean error of log volumes were significant for Cilician fir and Brutian pine (p<0.05). The mean error of Bruce’s and Smalian’s formulas were significant for all tree species and its all lengths log (p<0.05). However, Patterson-Doruska method can be used only estimating volumes of roundwood (cross-sectional area of butt end ≥ 15 cm) that is to be log standards in our country.
