Modernization and Social Change: Social Structure in Kılavuzlar Village

Social change affects all areas of our lives. Societies encounter with major social changes during their modernization processes. These changes shape social structures and daily life in both rural and urban areas. This study examines the social change in a village. Kılavuzlar village, which was a central village of the province of Karabük in the past, has entered into a rapid social change with the effect of the increase in the population of the city and foundation of Karabük University near the village. While it was previously defined as a village, the status of the region was changed to a neighborhood of Karabük. During this period, especially with the coming of students, the population has increased. In addition, village residents, who were previously working in agriculture to a large extent, started to engage in varying other jobs as well; and facilities such as cafes, fitness center and swimming pool were opened in the village. Ethics committee approval was obtained for this study according to the decision of Başkent University Social and Humanities Sciences and Arts ethics committee which is dated October 2, 2020 and numbered 17162298.600-446. In this study, 24 residents of the village (13 female, 11 male) were interviewed by using interview forms. Their witnessing to this social change, change in their daily lives and their agricultural production is the main focus of this study. For this purpose, theoretical framework and literature review were examined first. Then interviews were analyzed. According to the findings of the study, the participants are still engaged in agriculture. However, their daily lives have changed with the effect of urbanization and modernization that accelerated with the foundation of the University. The transition from primary group relations to secondary group relations has begun. With the effect of Karabük University founded next to the village and the increasing student population, new means of living emerged in the village. In the light of all these, it is possible to say that Kılavuzlar village is currently in a transition period with the effect of urbanization.

Modernleşme ve Sosyal Değişim: Kılavuzlar Köyünün Sosyal Yapısı

Sosyal değişim hayatımızın her alanında karşımıza çıkmaktadır.
