THE PROBLEM OF FORCED LEARNING IN GERMAN AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE CLASSES AND THE MAGIC OF LEARNING STRATEGIES:A CASE STUDY

This empirical study investigates the training of learning strategies especially in the listening comprehension class in German as a foreign language. At the beginning the learning environment in the turkisch school context and the forced learning in language classes will be described. Then the term “learning strategies” will be explained and the importance of learning strategies in the context of foreign language didactics will be stated. It will also be explained, how these learning strategies has been implemented into the phases of listening comprehension “before listening-while listening- after listening”. Besides, it will be shown through a case study, how this strategy training was assimilated and evaluated by 24 german language students in the preparatory class at a university in the southeast of Turkey. After a 12week study in the listening classes of the preparatory class the mean scores of a questionnaire were calculated and a qualitative interview was carried out in order to find out the attitudes of the students towards the strategy training and to ask about their evaluation about the lessons in this study. The analyse showed that strategy training was taken positively by the students and in addition to increasing the learning motivation also the language skills, especially the listening skills have improved
