EXPLORING THE VISUAL CULTURE APPROACH TO ART LITERACY AND EDUCATION IN TERMS OF THE CONDITION OF POSTMODERN CHILDREN
Today children are growing up in a quickly changing and volatile world identified by rapid technological transformations, an unpredictable global economy, new forms of socialization and communication, widening injustices and inequalities, changing understandings of civic engagement within a postmodern consumer society. These circumstances reshape the world in which we live in and the world for which we educate children. Since the children are bombarded with visual images and virtual realities on a daily basis in the postmodern consumer society, it is vital for them to learn how to critically analyze, decode, create and question the visual messages and the intended meaning in a visual text. The purpose of this paper is to analyze how the visual culture approach to art literacy and education provides opportunities for today’s children to develop visual literacy skills and competencies to learn what it means to be visually literate in a postmodern consumer society. Art educators can engage in democratic and performative projects that address real life issues regarding real life struggles of the students. Consequently, the art classroom can become a performative space where popular culture is explored and analyzed through situational performed practices
