İlkçağ Tarih Yazımının Batı Anadolulu Öncüleri: II-Lydialı Ksanthos

Günümüzde başlı başına bir bilim dalı olan tarih yazımı, önceleri yalnızca içinde yaşanılan anın olaylarını kayda geçirip bilgi aktarma uğraşı biçiminde oluyordu. Düşünce açısından yıllar süren gelişme sonucu, kendi zamanlarına ilişkin olayları yazan Miletoslu Hekataios, Lydialı Ksanthos, Lesboslu Hellanikos, Karyandalı Skylaks, Lampsakoslu Kharon ve Miletoslu Dionysios gibi yazarlar yerel tarihler yazmışlardır. Bunlardan biri olan Lydialı Ksanthos, “Lydiaka” (Lydia Tarihi) adlı eserin yazarıdır. Yazarın günümüze kalan fragmanları incelendiğinde onun öyküler, çoğu Hellenik olmayan halk masalları ve kırsal bölgelerin geçirdikleri jeolojik değişimleri anlatmaktan hoşlandığı ortaya çıkar. Bunun yanı sıra Ksanthos’un, çağdaşı Herodotos’u etkilediği ve sonraki yüzyıllarda yaşayan tarih yazarlarına kaynak sağladığı görülür.

The Western Anatolian Pioneers of the Writing of History of the Antiquity: II-Xanthus the Lydian

Historiography, which has now become a field of scholarly study, was formerly an effort to merely register current events and inform the coming generations through the chronicles handed down. As a result of hunderds of years’ development in the method of thinking, there appeared the writers of local history among whom were Hecataeus of Miletus, Xanthus the Lydian, Hellenicus of Lesbos, Scylax of Caryanda, Charon of Lampsacus and Dionysios of Miletus. Xanthus the Lydian, who was one of the writer of “The History of Lydia” (Lydiaca). A careful study of the remaining fragments of the work mentioned reveals that the author enjoyed telling tales most of which were not Hellenic and dealing with the geological alterations occuring in rural areas. The study of the work, furthermore, reveals that Xanthus of Lydia was deeply influenced by his contemporary Herodotus and provided the succeeding writer of history with the material they needed.
