Bu hayvanların 15’i sağlıklı buzağı grubunu oluştururken, 15’i koksidiozisli buzağı grubunu oluşturdu.
Lipid Peroxidation Level and Antioxidant Enzyme Activities in Calves Coccidiosis
This study was performed to evaluate the plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) level, and erythrocyte glutation peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities in calves with coccidiosis. In this study, 30 calves, aged between 2 weeks to 6 months were used. Fifteen of these animal were included in the healthy calves group, while the other 15 consisted of calves group with coccidiosis. Clinical examinations of the animals were carried out. Faecel samples for parasitological examination were collected from calves. Eimeria spp. oocysts were seen in the faecal samples of the all calves with coccidiosis. Blood samples from the calves were collected for determination of plasma MDA level, and erythrocyte GSH-Px, CAT and SOD activities. Plasma MDA level was significantly higher in the young cattle with ringworm compared to controls (p<0.05). However, the erythrocyte SOD, CAT and GSH-Px activities in the calves with coccidiosis was significantly lower (p<0.05) than that of the controls. In conclusion, the determination of increasing in plasma MDA levels and decreasing in erythrocytes CAT, SOD and GSH-Px activities in the infected calves suggested that coccidiosis caused lipid peroxidation. This indicated that the equilibrium between oxidants and antioxidants impaired in favour of oxidants in the calves with coccidiosis.
