Application of botulinum toxin ınjection to the submandibular glands of patients treated with clozapine and sufering from hypersalivation
Aim: Clozapine is an antipsychotic drug which is used to treat severe schizophrenia or in cases where patient doesnot respond to conventional neuroleptics. One of the most important side effects of this drug is increase in salivation. In this study we investigated the effects of botulinum toxin injection which is used in order to prevent the salivationincrease, and the effects on the quality of life of the patients who use clozapine. Material and Method: In this study the salivation amounts of three patients who use clozapine were measured, be- fore and after the botulinum toxin injection and compared. Results: The salivation amounts of three patients were measured as 1,8 ml, 1,2 ml ve 1,4 ml respectively before theinjection, and as 0,2 ml, 0,1 ml and 0,2 ml after the injection. 88%, 91% and 85 % reduction was detected in thesalivation amounts of the patients. All patients salivation degrees decreased signifcantly. Conclusion: Botulinum toxin injection to the submandibular gland is a very effective treatment method for hyper- salivation and it is also recommended since it has temporary effects.
