Examination of Relationship Between University Students' Nomophobia Levels and Behavior

Today, smartphones are quite intertwined with our lives and facilitates our daily routines. However, problematic and excessive use of smartphones also leads to negative psychological effects such as, dependence, stress, anxiety. As one of the recent phenomena highlighted by both media and academia, nomophobia is defined as "feeling of fear and anxiety when an individual cannot access to or communicate via their mobile device." Such anxiety negatively affects the individual's focus on his/her daily tasks. Increasing smartphone prevalence gives rise to nomofobia among young people, which is proved to have negative effects on their academic life. Therefore, specification of changes in young people's behaviors is important. This study aims to examine prevalence of nomofobia and its effects on behaviors of 683 university students enrolled in various universities in various provinces during the 2015-2016 Spring Semester. Data analysed by utilizing descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test and ANOVA. The mean of total points scored from nomofobia scale and its two dimensions, i.e. inability to access information and communication pointed out nomophobia prevalence. Frequently checking phones, carrying a charger at all times, keeping phones on during night, spending time with phone before sleep, checking phone upon wake-up were common behaviors among nomophobic individuals.
