Kıbrıs ve Diğer Akdeniz toplumlarında Eşkıyalık, efsane, terör

Bu makalede eşkıyalık kavramı sorgulanmaktadır. Eşkıyalığı tek anlamlı bir kavram olarak değerlendiren görüşlerin aksine makale eşkıyalığın özgül koşullara bağlı olarak farklı coğrafyalarda farklı eşkıyalık tiplerinin görülebileceğini ileri sürer. Bu çerçevede eşkıyalığı indirgemeci bir bakış açısıyla değerlendiren Hobsbawm ve Blok’un tezlerini de belli bir ölçüye kadar reddeder. Eşkıyalık, bir protesto şekli olmadığı gibi salt köylü ayaklanmalarını bastırmak için kullanılan bir araç da değildir. Eşkıyalık, bunlar da dâhil olmak üzere birçok işlevi bünyesinde barındıran bir yapıdır. Fakat daha ziyade kanunsuzluğun saldırgan bir türüdür. Ayrıca eşkıyalığa dair efsaneler, yüceltmeler ve romantik yaklaşımlar çoğunlukla gerçeğin bir yansıması değildir. Eşkıyalığın edebiyat yoluyla yüceltilmesi kentli orta sınıfın siyasi stratejilerini meşru kılma yöntemidir.

Banditry, myth, and terror in cyprus and other mediterranean societies

This essay argues the concept of banditry. In contrast to the ideas considering banditry as a univocal phenomenon, this article suggests that under specific conditions different types of banditry can emerge in different lands. In this respect, the article rejects, to a certain extend, the claims of Hobsbawm and Blok which handles the issue in a reductionist way. Banditry is neither a form of protest nor just a means for suppressing peasant unrest. It is a phenomenon where many other functions, including these, can simultaneously exist together. However banditry is more an aggressive form of illegality. In addition the myths, glorification and romanticised attitudes concerning banditry do not reflect the reality. The glorification of banditry through literature is a way of urban middle classes to legitimize their political strategies.
