Kratylos: Gerçekliği Araştırmanın Aracı Olarak Dil

Platon, Kratylos diyalogunda "adların doğruluğu" sorununu konu eder. Hem, bir "ad" ile o adın "adlandırdığı" şey arasındaki "doğruluk" ilişkisinin bir "uzlaşım" konusu olduğunu ileri süren uzlaşımcı dil yaklaşımını, hem de, bir "ad" ile o adın "adlandırdığı" şey arasında "doğal" bir "doğruluk" ilişkisi bulunduğunu ileri süren doğalcı dil yaklaşımını eleştirir. Platon, uzlaşımcı ve doğalcı dil anlayışlarının her ikisinin de gerçekliği araştırmanın aracı olan diyalektik yöntemi olanaksızlaştırdığını göstermek ister. Bu makalede, Platon'un, Kratylos diyalogunda, dili, gerçekliği araştırmanın heuristic bir aracı olarak ele aldığı ileri sürülmektedir.

Cratylus: Language as an Instrument of Inquiring the Reality Plato, in Cratylus, raises the question of the "correctness of names". He criticizes both the conventionalist view, which holds that "convention", to use a word "to name" something, is "correct" way of "naming"; and the naturalistic view that holds that there is a "natural" relation between a "name" and the thing "named". Plato discusses that if conventionalist view or naturalistic view of language as taken to be correct then the method of dialectic as the inquiring the nature of things becomes impossible. I argue that Plato's aim is to develop view of language that conceives language as a heuristic instrument of inquiring the nature of things.
